Hashish has grown consistently in polarity throughout western culture. With waste a considerable concern among growers and users, hashish offers those individuals and producers a means of utilizing more of the cannabis plant.

What is Hashish?

Hashish is a multipurpose by-product derived from the cannabis plant. Is can be consumed in a number of ways and offers a variety of effects and experiences thanks to its versatility and potency.

Hashish produces similar effects to cannabis buds but is generally much stronger. Like cannabis, hashish is usually smoked or eaten. However, modern technology has opened avenues for hashish tinctures, vaporizers, and many more methods of ingestion.

In this article, we’ll explain a few of the methods by which cannabis is produced and how you can use the resulting material to your enjoyment.

How is Hashish made?

Hashish is made in a number of ways. The most common among modern producers include:

Sieving – Sieved hashish is just what it sounds like. Dried and cured cannabis buds are arranged on a fine screen of either silk or metal. In this case, fine is defined as 65-125 microns or 120-230 lines per inch.

Chilling the cannabis buds being used in hashish production will result in more efficient separation of resin glands (trichomes) from the plant matter. A temperature of 40 degrees Fahrenheit is sufficient to achieve this end.

The buds should never be pressed or pushed through the openings of the screen. The resin glands are harvested by shaking, rolling, or otherwise agitating the material over the screen surface. The resin glands will then fall through the openings onto the collection surface below.

This d of resin glands can be smoked or used in cooking, as-is. However, the act of compressing the powder into hashish later will influence the taste and effects enjoyed by users.

You can make your own hash at home with this method if you are a recreational cannabis user. Simply grind or process your buds in a container that features a built-in screen and collection chamber. Each time you grind your buds to smoke, a few more resin glands will be collected for your eventual use as a concentrate or pressed into hashish.

Pressing – As we alluded to in the entry above, resin glands can be pressed into hashish discs, bricks, and blocks when resin glands are abundant. Additionally, modern machinery can use tremendous pressures achieved through hydraulics to crease near liquid hash from whole buds.

In this case, the resin glands are collected and pressed. The process changes the overall chemistry of the material, changing the powder into a viscous, fragrant mass of concentrated THC.

Pressed hash is appreciated by users for its potency, easy of transportation, and long shelf-life. While cannabis buds will steadily degrade overt time in flavor, smell, and effect, hashish remains a reliable source of THC terpenes, and psychoactive effects long after it’s been processed.

Small-batch hash powder is often pressed using the shoe-press method.

When you’ve collected a small amount, around 3-4 grams, you can place the material into a plastic bag and place it in the heel of your shoe. By walking throughout the day, you will compress the resin glands evenly and thoroughly.

The resulting compressed hash with taste and smell far better than the inside of your shoe, we swear.

Alternatively, you can roll the baggie of resin glands with a rolling pin or a bottle filled with hot water to both warm and compress the hashish into your final product.

Finger hashish – this hashish variety is made as part of the trimming process with clipping the excess vegetative growth from harvested cannabis buds.

After hours of trimming, the trimmer’s work surface will be covered in plant matter and plenty of resin glands. Scrape the surface with a rigid object, like a credit card or dough scraper. Once collected, shake the material through a fine mesh screen over the same surface to separate plant matter from trichomes.

Set aside the plant matter as the resin glands are what you will focus on for making finger hash.

Use the warmth of your hands to break down the glands and press them together. Over time your fingers will be covered with a dark sticky substance. This is hashish. Scraps off and work the substance into small balls to be combined as able.

Ultimately, you should be able to create a shiny ball of hash that will be free of any sticky qualities. Leave your hashish ball(s) to dry over the next 24-hours in a cool dark place. Hash made in this way can last several years.

Bubble hashish – Bubble hash making is a wet sieving method. Bubble hash utilizes a system of bags with increasingly finer filters at their bottom, called bubble bags.

It all starts with:

  • A bucket
  • Ice
  • Water
  • Cannabis trimmings
  • An egg beater or other agitation tool
  • Set of 5 bubble bags, 48 micrometer –to 200 micrometer mesh

Bubble hashish is a great way to get the most out of a harvest. The method involves agitating the resin glands that remain on trimmed plant matter into an iced water suspension. In this ice water, the resin glands retain their form and break more readily from the plant’s surface. The glands sink through the increasingly finer filters which are later lifted slowly, one-by-one, to reveal finer grades of hashish. These sediments are then dried and pressed to create the final product, bubble hash.

Butane extraction – Butane hash oil extraction is a solvent hash making method.

This extraction method passes butane gas through cannabis which effectively dissolves the THC, which is then collected and further processed.

This is considered a dangerous method of hash making due to its danger.

Butane fumes are highly toxic and highly flammable.

Final Thoughts on How Hashish is Made

Hashish has been a part of cannabis culture for as long as it’s existed. With it have come many methods to refine its productions. Above are just a few of the more common methods used by cannabis growers and processors.

The information is important to know because it will help inform your decision about where to buy hashish. Knowing what processes are safe and unsafe allows you to ask important questions.
