A Heavy Indica Hybrid

Bubba Kush is a highly popular heavy indica hybrid. It was originally bred in LA and its breeder claims that one parent was an OG Kush plant and the other was an unnamed Northern Lights phenotype that was brought back from Mardi Gras in New Orleans. This unknown strain came to be known as ‘Bubba’, but it has since been lost.

Before 1998, Bubba Kush was only available as a clone. However, it has since been replicated so that its seeds could be sold. It is very much a classic indica with a sedative high that will leave users relaxed but functional. Typically, it has a THC content of between 15% and 22%.

The plant has small to medium sized buds that share the dense bud structure of many indicas. Bubba Kush has dark green leaves and they can sometimes show shades of purple due to anthocyanin pigments that have been activated by cold temperatures during the growing process. It is a resinous strain with a coating of white trichomes over the colourful leaves. The flowers have a light smell but when burnt it smells more like hash, as is usual with a Kush. It is one of the few strains with purple flowers that does not result in a grape-like taste as the pigments that affect its colour do not affect the flavour. It is a highly pungent strain and the smell tends to linger.

Bubba Kush’s high tends to start with a disoriented sensation; however, this soon gives way to a body melt that intensifies as the high goes on. While smokers won’t feel energised, they also won’t feel like they cannot focus or carry out tasks. In general, users feel very relaxed with a sense of physical comfort but without couchlock.

The strain is often used for medicinal reasons. It has been known to provide relief from depression and anxiety, as well as sooth aches and pains. Furthermore, some users have found it a good treatment for insomnia. Overall though, it is a strain that is suitable for both night-time and daytime use.

Bubba Kush is one of the easier strains to grow and therefore suitable for newcomers to cultivation. The plants can be grown indoors, outside and in greenhouses. The strain has the advantage of being naturally resistant to moulds and other pests, but it does require consistent sunlight and daytime temperatures of between 72 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit. It will grow well indoors in soil, but will perform better in hydroponic solution. When grown indoors it will flower between 8 and 9 weeks and is ready for harvest outdoors in early October. It is a fairly low yield strain with 1 to 1.2 ounces per square foot, but the flowers are usually very high quality. Thanks to the sticky trichomes the buds can be cured and sold, or made into hash or other concentrates.

Bubba Kush is a firm favourite in the United States and is growing in popularity all of the time. It has been the inspiration for a number of child strains, such as Bubba’s Gift, Madness and Blueberry Kush, and is a great way to unwind at the end of a hard day.
