Double Dutch Farms is a company run by two Dutch brothers who are committed to setting an ethical and responsible example through research and advocacy in a bid to bring about widespread acceptance of cannabis.
They come from a strong agricultural background that dates back over 100 years. Their family, the Van Wingerdens, have been growing since the 1890s. They started with vegetables, bedding plants, ornamentals and more. Each generation of the family has honed the skills and until the mid-1900s, they were based in the heartland of horticulture, the Netherlands. As technology and growing methods advanced so did the family’s practices.
In 1948, following World War II, the family moved to the garden state of New Jersey. They worked hard to establish themselves and stuck to what they knew best, growing. They used Dutch techniques that had been passed down within the family and they became a leader in the commercial horticulture industry. Today the Van Wingerdens own and run over twenty commercial grows stretching across the United States from New Jersey to Washington.
When Washington State legalized cannabis in 2012 they saw a new opportunity. Mike and Matt Van Wingerden entered into the new industry and converted a third of their existing three-acre greenhouse into what is now Double Dutch Farms. They have used their family’s collective growing knowledge, together with new innovations and technology, to grow the highest quality sun-grown cannabis at the lowest possible cost.
They believe that first and foremost cannabis plants need plenty of sun. This should be combined with living organic soil that contains all of the nutrients needed for the healthiest possible plants. This method helps them reveal the true genetic potential of any given strain, and it allows them to minimize the use of pesticides. The plants are then grown in state of the art greenhouses that are equipped with fully automated environmental controls, such as a wet wall cooling system and blackout curtains to simulate night and provide a dark-light balance for flowering plants.
Double Dutch Fars are dedicated to building sustainable relationships between producers, stores, and communities in order to help build the “love, generosity, and acceptance that is the culture of cannabis.”
